The MARC 2 meter repeater
The operating frequency is 146.955 (-)
The main transmitting and receiving site is located in Rockville, MD with several remote sites providing enhanced and extended coverage within Montgomery County.

A repeater receives a signal on one frequency and simultaneously retransmits (repeats) it on another frequency (frequency offset), extending the range of communication.
Most transceivers designed for FM repeater operation (including handhelds) are already set up for the correct offset.

Ham radio nets
Amateur radio nets are like meeting places; a spot on the dial where a group of people with a common interest can meet at an agreed time to exchange information or ideas, test their equipment and meet others. Nets vary enormously with some dedicated to specific topics such as marine position reporting, tracking weather systems or helping manage recoveries following natural disasters such as cyclones, earthquakes or tsunamis. Others are less formal and formed simply to keep up social contacts and chat.

  • Net Control Station: Say what is in bold font.
  • Use standard ITU phonetics to set a good example
  • Italics indicate instructions for the net control. Do not say what is in italics.
  • Items in [brackets] will change from week to week or with each net control person. Make sure you substitute the correct information.
  • Break periodically to allow emergency break-ins and so as not to “time-out” the repeater.

[START at 2000 hours local after the repeater announces the hour and the female voice says “Good Evening.”]

Is this frequency in use? [Wait 5 seconds]

This is the MONTGOMERY CERT – TRAINING NET.  This is [YOUR CALL SIGN – phonetically] [YOUR NAME - phonetically]. Is there EMERGENCY traffic for the NET??

[Wait – then acknowledge anyone with emergency “traffic” (message) and ask them to say their message. After they do this, you will continue with the formal net.]

Is there a backup net control station on frequency?  [Wait and acknowledge]

Calling the Montgomery County Maryland CERT net.  This net is for members of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) in Montgomery County Maryland who hold amateur radio licenses and those who are monitoring and are working on, or considering, an Amateur Radio license.

This net is scheduled to meet here on the 146.955 repeater courtesy of the Montgomery Amateur Radio Club.  We meet the first, third, fourth, and fifth Thursday evenings, from now through the end of June 2007.  That is, all but the second Thursday.

This is a training net allowing newly licensed amateurs who are members of CERT to become comfortable with amateur radio net procedures and their equipment before being called into service during an incident.

Later on, as CERT members become more familiar with their equipment and radio procedures, we expect to include a review of message traffic handling procedures. We encourage our CERT radio amateur licensees to participate in the Montgomery County Emergency and Public Service Net every Tuesday, once they are comfortable with net procedures. The Emergency and Public Service net takes place at 2000 hours (8 pm) on this same frequency: 146.955 with the standard negative offset.

Finally, we hope to graduate to a simplex net or nets in the fall of 2007.

[Wait. Calling stations should indicate their desire to speak by saying their call sign only.
